Lake Michigan

❓Did you know❓

✔️ In Ojibwe Michigami, or Ininwewi-gichigami, Lake Michigan is the only one of the Great Lakes entirely within the borders of the United States; the others are shared with Canada.
✔️ It has a surface area of 22,300 square miles (58,000 km2),making it the largest lake entirely within one country by surface area (Lake Baikal, in Russia, is larger by water volume), and the fifth largest lake in the world.
✔️ It forms a single body of water with Lake Huron and the two sides are connected through the Straits of Mackinac.
✔️ The first Europeans to see Lake Michigan were French traders and explorers in the 1600’s, one of which called Lake Michigan the Grand Lac.
✔️ It connects to the Gulf of Mexico via Chicago River and Mississippi River.
